#19 When assigned homework, there is to be no moaning or complaining.
The punishment is to double the assignment. The larger lesson here is to accept responsivity for your attitude. I think it is a good idea to let children know early, that if you're going to be a moaner or complainer, the work is doubled in more ways than one. You are teaching that being a "Negative Nancy" is not going to make you more popular, or make you more likeable, or make the task easier. No one likes to be around a complainer. It is easier to just do the task, rather than putting more effort and energy into avoiding what you will end up doing anyway. It also gives the child an opportunity to communicate in a manner that will provide positive feedback. The child can ask if the assignment can be reduced or time extended due to other obligations in an adult-like fashion, and the teacher can weigh the request to allow for a change to accommodate without it being a Whine Fest! Several great lessons, the very least of which is "How to communicate your needs".
